Landscape

I focus on detailed design of temperate forest gardens that benefit the humans who plant them, the animals and insects that live in them, and the soil that they grow in. Whether it’s a small lawn in town or multiple acres of forest or reclaimed pasture, I believe that it’s always worth investing time on the front end thinking about the site and the design as a means get the most out of the finished landscape.

Goal Articulation

With any project it’s best to know what you want before you get out the shovels and/or the checkbook. We’ll go through a detailed questionnaire together and I’ll help you talk through and define your principles and goals. It’s easy to brush off this step but later on in the project you’ll be glad you spent this time.

Base Mapping

My design process is very visual and that starts with a good base map. A base map is a to-scale and accurate map of your site. First I’ll measure landmarks and take photos on the site. I’ll combine that with publicly available state and local data as well as a survey (if you have one) to provide a canvas with which to begin our design.

Site Assessment

With your goals defined and an accurate base map in the computer, I analyze the site. How does your topography and soil affect drainage? Which areas of your site get the most sun? Are there any frost traps to watch out for? Working with the existing site features rather than against them will save you time and money as well as maximized your plants chances of thriving.

Plant Selection

Not every plant will thrive on every site. I’ll help you develop a list of plants that will meet your goals on your site. Looking for a nitrogen fixing and dynamic accumulating tree? My database with hundreds of plants and thousands of data points will suggest one in a few clicks.

Detailed Design

CAD software expedites the design process by allowing me to organize the plantings into layers and mapping them to scale. Iteration during design is quick and easy and planting is as simple as taking measurements off the finished to-scale master plan.

Planting

Once we’ve settled on a plan, I’m often available to help with planting. I’m also content to tell you how I do things and leave you to introduce yourself to your trees and get your hands dirty. This is a great time to call in your friends to help. I do grow some plants on our land for sale or trade. Additionally, if you’re looking to get acquainted with a good local nursery East Hill Tree Farm is a great place to start.
